Staten Island

Since we’ve been here a while we’ve been able to go off and visit a few places that probably aren’t really at the top of anyone’s New York City to-do list—like take the Staten Island Ferry, and actually get off of it on the Staten Island side.

We did, and visited the Alice Austen House. Alice was a female photographer in the late 1800s, which I’m sure put her in some rare company. The family home still stands along the waterfront, and it’s filled with some of the 8,000 photographs she took in her lifetime—about how many we’ll take in our few weeks here.

We took the bus around the area a bit, and let’s just say that Staten Island is definitely an outer borough, and has very little in common with Manhattan.

You have to appreciate the free ferry ride on a beautiful day like this.

When in Little Italy, do as the Romans do.

  1. My god. You visited my oft mocked little island. Feels very surreal, been following you since the olden days with the first boat.

  2. The ferry photo of the new wtc with the arm tattoo is so good someone could be forgiven for suspecting pbotoshop. (but I’d have used a different font on the tattoo so people wouldn’t wonder what our children’s laugheer sounds like. 🙂 )

    1. Thanks. I noticed it but then had to keep waiting for his wife to step back out of the way. I thought for sure he’d take his arm down before I could get the shot off. Serendipitous that I’d be standing right there at that moment.

  3. O.Kaay..Where was the sgetti??..Looks tasty……A zillion years ago I had friends living on a barge..That just looked like a barge…On the other side of Manhattan. You had to go thru fences but once inside it was special….Picture a swell house-boat inside…..Or one of your boats…I had a great weekend there….The coppers towed our car tho..Had to go thru Harlem to some pier to get it back…
    It was worth it…

  4. Great Pictures, a month ago my son was at a preschool checkup, and the pediatrician tested him on all kinds of things. At the end she asked him what his mother is. He answered: she’s a woman! And your papa she asked. He thought and thought and then said: He is the incredible green Hulk. Love the pic of the mini Hulks. I’ve got an idea for a new book. A book on how to manage the thousands of pictures you take in this digital world of photography. .

  5. Welcome to our our fair little corner of the world. In large part thanks to you I have nothing but a sailboat and no plans…. Well undecided that is…..

You should consider heading north to the Catskills and also check out eastern Long Island – also a way east if heading to New England. The north fork has great harvest activities with fun for the kids and great wineries (from someone who loves Cali). I’m on shelter island with the boat.

  6. I had to look up the meaning of the tattoo. And now I’ve been reading about Bobby Sands, hunger strikes, and Northern Ireland for the past 30 minutes. Really interesting.

  7. I had a friend ask the other day. “How are your friends in that homeless family doing?” The question took me back — a member of Byron’s team, perhaps, living in a shelter? I finally figured out they were talking about the Bums and a had a good laugh. Thought you’d find that entertaining…… 😀
