Not being southerners, we never know where the heck we’re supposed to be being careful, so we appreciate signs like these.
The USS Alabama Memorial Park is a cool place. We were here a few years ago, but it was just as good the second time around. It was nice to see groups of old war buddies touring the place, too.
We started out touring the submarine, and all agreed it looked pretty darn nice. Probably not when it is filled with all the people that would be on there during a mission, but when it was just the four of us we could see living there.
Then it was on to the Alabama.
We like downtown Mobile. It’s compact and has just enough of all the good things you expect in a city.
The history museum was good. While I was there, I learned while reading some papers, that the guy that the Meaher State Park we’re camped at got its name from is actually a horrible human being. Timothy Meaher was a slave trader who made a $1,000 bet with some friends that he could illegally smuggle 110 slaves into Mobile on his ship in 1860, then did so. It remains the last known slave ship. Alabama State Parks claims it’s named after Augustine Meaher, direct descendant and beneficiary of Timothy’s slaving and land ownership. Another solid American history lesson for the day.
The Muhammad Ali mural didn’t survive since our last visit five years ago.
Catfish and pulled pork. One thing we really get used to in the south is a steady stream of barbeque dinners.

I was happy I stopped at the USS Alabama park as I was driving through once. It is well worth the time.

Hope you didn’t miss nearby Fairhope (one of the cutest towns in America) and there is also some sort of alligator rescue place nearby – Alligator Alley.

Do you have any plans to head north east in the spring/summer and explore the New England now that you’re back on land?
if i remember correctly, that’s the one area of the US that you haven’t given a lot of time

Sailing catamaran, Porsche, VW microbus, monohull sailboat, Dodge Travco motorhome, IH Travelall/Airstream trailer, Grand Banks trawler, Bluebird Bus. I’m always wondering what’s next. I think you’ve found the idea, now you just have to find the rig: a Navy surplus WWII-era diesel-electric submarine. Shouldn’t be too tough to find parts for at Napa, right?
