Alone in Old San Juan

La Perla and Fort

Slow pace of life as we roll into September, checking the weather daily for signs of any potential tropical weather in the Atlantic. So far so good. Hoping to squeak through the month and then start stocking up the boat again.

We need a bigger office.

Work

Sundays are supposed to be stay home days right now. COVID restrictions are in place. Yet Sunday the traffic lining up to get into Old Town stretched endlessly. The police stood down there and allowed maybe one in twenty (only with proof of residency) through. Not sure what everyone thought they were going to do down here, anyway, with no shops, no restaurants, no museums, and no forts open.

The next day was Labor Day, and there was not a soul in sight.

The La Perla neighborhood full of color. I’m not sure how they can remain standing after all of Puerto Rico’s hurricanes.

    1. Love them! I just returned from AZ, which is beautiful as well, but the houses (where I was, and which are those colors for reasons for coolness) all brown, white, and brown – gets to be a bit old after awhile.

  1. Nice pictures as always. Puerto Rico looks so lovely. I doubt that I will get the chance to go there so it’s nice to see if through your family’s eyes.

    1. We are enjoying Old San Juan but not as much as our Mexican plazas of other off-seasons. Two more weeks to really find all the nooks and crannies, then islands!

  2. I love the narrow streets with the colorful, detailed architecture , and the cemetery. Enjoy your time there w/o crowds of tourists.

    1. They have some pretty nice sculptures in Old San Juan. That one is called “The Citizens of the Americas” independence for Puerto Rico and Cuba. We like the 3 babies with the top one being upside down.

  3. Great shots! Love all the colorful colonial buildings, and your drone shots are amazing. Love the kids wearing their masks even alone and outdoors. That’s dedication!

    1. Puerto Rico is masks all the time (or $100 fine), sure when exercising, eating, drinking – no. But wandering the streets everyone is wearing them. No big deal unless made into one.

  4. Your photography is fantastic. The city is beautiful and you are showing the world her beautiful. Thanks for taking us along.
