Hurri-corona Season

Old San Juan

We all really enjoyed our patio view in San Juan. Much of the summer was cloud free, but the last week or two the afternoons always get dramatic. It’s been beautiful to watch it develop, but the timing of it has been a pain. The kids’ sailing classes begin at 3:30, and this would always come rolling down out of the hills around 2:30. We’d have to watch and wait to see if it would just be a gentle rain, or if it would bring thunder and lightning to cancel class.

One day after sailing class I asked Ouest how it went and she said to me, “It was fun. Lowe is pro.”

I said, “Oh, that’s nice of you to say. He is doing pretty good isn’t he?”

And she said, “No, he’s pro. Like, he’s definitely the best sailor out there. He’s way faster than everyone.”

It was funny, I felt a surge of pride in Lowe, but also in Ouest for so casually paying her brother such a nice compliment. And yeah, he really is pro. I’ve watched him. He’s so far ahead of the pack he is always easy to spot off sailing by himself.

We moved back to the boat for all of two nights before taking off again. I had decided that I really needed to get out and see my mom for a few days, and at the last second we decided Ali and the kids should go see her sisters, grandma, and grandpa before we disappear down island for who knows how long. With things the way they are right now it seems quite possible that if we don’t see family now we may not see them for an entirely too long period of time.

Packing to go to the States is always a bit of a challenge. Ali rummaged through all the kids’ clothes and realized the entirety of their warm clothes wardrobe was one pair of jeans, one pair of stretchy pants, a sweatshirt, and a poncho. All of which were over two years old from a period in time when they were both much smaller. Also discovered that I don’t own a pair of shoes. Again.

This is why we don’t go to the States. More or less.

We haven’t been pulling the camera out much lately. Seems like we’re in a bit of a funk, as I’m sure a lot of people are. This hurricane season really dragged on. While we’re usually all very excited for our off-season adventures, this hurricane-COVID season just sort of drained the fun out of things. We’re all ready to get going. To do something. Anything. Deserted beaches and clear waters are on our minds. I’ve got a few days alone on the boat to bang out a relatively small list of boat chores so that when we get back all there will be to do is load up the refrigerators with fresh food, and untie the docklines.

  1. Other than the family part, you don’t want to come to the states. Repeat after me. I do not want to go back to the states.
Everyone would probably be better off coming to PR. Best of luck. John

    1. Agree, but with aging parents and it being easier for us to travel to them – here we are. Plus we are off soon for 6-months-plus of cruising season where we won’t (hopefully) be airplane traveling at all.

  2. Definitely not as much fun this season but we’ve still enjoyed your beautiful photos! We’re calling our RV trip here on the west coast “Cooties & Conflagrations”! We were even evacuated from a camping-a GO NOW-order so we could not even hitch up the trailer. Just bolted. We were so lucky it rained & helped put the nearby fire out, so we had a ‘home’ to return to.
Many folks ended up homeless, so sad.
Have a safe trip back to the states & we look forward to your fun filled future adventures! šŸ™‚

    1. Seriously if it isn’t one thing it is another this year. Glad you were able to get back to your home. 10-days and counting until we off the dock and on the move again. Unless something else happens. šŸ˜‰

  3. Thatā€™s pretty cool about Lowe. They are racing I guess? Seems like they must be if ā€œfastā€ is part of the gig. Has the sailboat speed geeking out begun? Talk of fairing the dinghy and fresh sails? ?

    1. No racing, just given directions to “tack across, around that buoy, and back” stuff. No geek speak yet – but maybe when we get out to our own anchorages again.

  4. All in a funk? Absolutely. Here in the UK, denied my boat in the Caribbean I’ve just bought an inflatable Kayak to potter around the rivers in South East England. Even to sleep out over the winter with the right gear for one night. So I’m going to have a true adventure but only 40 miles from the house. Tent and cooker in the kayak and here I go! A breakfast in the morning of gallons of tea and a bacon sandwich and then back in the kayak. Bliss!

    Stay safe, Gerry

  5. I hope your visit state side is safe and enjoyable. Don’t press your luck though. The dog and I are RVing south to AZ and a long term rental through Jan. My workshop/living quarters build on my property fizzled due to Covid and a crazy compacted build season. I’ll have to push it off until next spring…again. I’m so done with the Corona stuff. I wish you all safe travels as always.

  6. It truly is high funk season. Spouse is a Nurse Practitioner; COVID-19 is no freaking fun at all. Last two patients were under 35 and “not expected to make it”. I spend a lot of time running with the dogs. Gotta do what you can do while you can.

    ’cause you never know…

  7. “Also discovered, I don’t own a pair of shoes”
I love it. Good on Ya!
I’ve followed you guys for a few years now. I also dream of cruising the world. If I am having a bad day, I will check out your site and be inspired to work a few hours more, to make it happen quicker.
