Temples Old and New

A lot of people who visit Mexico City stay in the outlying neighborhoods, but we always prefer to be right in Centro. We walk out the door and are immediately surrounded by interesting history, food, architecture, and people. After a couple of weeks in big cities we start to pine for our home back on the road, but for a little while the stimulation of a big city feels fun and exciting. Always nice that we can get that mix in Mexico.

This picture makes me think that Ouest is going to be taller than Ali by the time she is ten.

Templo Mayor. Digging up amazing temples covered by the Spanish. Makes you realize that history doesn’t really have to go back too far. In the grand scheme of things it shouldn’t be too much longer before someone comes along and razes the Christian temples.

For just a couple bucks we got to go see an exhibition of Picasso and Diego Rivera. The kids are already pretty familiar with Rivera, but this was their first introduction to Picasso. There were a few questions.

Rainy season kicked in a few days after we got here. Every afternoon there is a good cleansing.

Lowe lost a tooth, so the kids built a fairy house to put it in. There, some small snacks awaited the tooth fairy, who left behind 20 pesos and some candy.

No visit to Mexico City is complete without climbing around on the roof of The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven. We love that name. We’re always amazed that they let us traipse around on the roof of a 400 year old church.

All the locals know what this box is. You can’t believe the crowds inside Pasteleria Ideal.

  1. What a beautiful city! Are you having any issues with the altitude? We were quite winded in San Miguel last year.
Is it my iPad, or are the highlights in your pictures a bit washed out?

    1. I’m not sure what that means, exactly, but if you mean the white skies in this post, that’s just the weather lately. The sky is just a solid sheet of white all day, and gets darker in the afternoons when the rains show up.

  2. Your photos, oh, your photos. Seriously, your next money making endeavor could be a coffee table photo book of all the great places you’ve been. So good to see y’all still out there enjoying life and all the great adventures out there waiting to be experienced. Keep having fun Bumbuzzle.

  3. Gorgeous gorgeous photos! And yes, Ouest looks likes she’s going to pass Ali. That is the first thing I noticed in that photo – just how tall she is getting.

  4. Wow. Great photos in this post. I’m really liking Mexico City. How cool to be able to explore a 400 year old church, roof and all. I too noticed how tall Ouest is getting. I’ve been following you guys since when you had the 58 bus. Thanks for sharing your travels with us.

  5. as always …great imagery! this time there was a noticeable difference in the height of your younguns. like weeds, i’m tell’n ya. ha.

  6. I love your photos, and the city. It is refreshing to know you can still walk on the ceiling. I was sure they would close it off at some point in time. I have never felt safer in any other big city, and I love the Metro. It is the best I have seen, including Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona. And who needs to go shopping, you can buy it all while riding.
