Winding Down in San Juan

We haven’t been venturing out very far the past few weeks, mostly just hanging out around home in Old San Juan. Always enjoy getting to know a place like the back of our hands. Hurricane seasons always seem to give us that chance. And then one day we’re ready to go again.

Save a Gato’s headquarters. A nice safe space for the cats of Old San Juan. One thing we’ve never seen or heard here, that we find oddly missing, is a cat fight. We’d like to thank all of our friends who so kindly donated to Save a Gato without even being asked. The people there were very kind to us when we first asked them for help with Rico.

Of course they all come straight for me since I am (claim to be) allergic to cats.

Seems like just about every country has a house they call the “Narrowest in the World.” La Casa Estrecha is 5′ wide, and 36′ long. Perfect. I wish it was open to the public.

We’ve been working on a few projects as well. Nothing very exciting. Some fresh varnish in the shower, of all places. Tracking down a leak in one of the refrigerator lines, unsuccessfully. And generally just staring at a pile of other things that should be done, but aren’t really pressing issues. While I do that Ali, as is typical, is cleaning and organizing. We’ll be back aboard in no time now.

And just to let everyone know, Ali is doing just fine after the car wreck a couple weeks ago. Thanks for all the messages.

  1. I’m a long time reader and was thinking…
While you bum around the islands this winter, you pitch Netflix and Amazon Prime a 10 episode with option to do more travel/doc series of the Bums navigating the Great Loop. Your resume will sell itself and a bidding war will result in a lucrative deal that opens the door to do other series down the road. Your trip starts on eastern leg of the loop in April.
The series is a huge hit and your kids become world wide tween/teen social media influencers with 30 million followers. They make enough money to retire before they turn 20 and finance their own racing team and become the first brother, sister co captains to win the America’s Cup. You buy an island in the Virgin Islands and reign over your trading empire while you sip on a cold one.
Good news is, I only want 5% for the idea!,,

    1. Thanks, John. Appreciate your high hopes for us. 😉
(Funny enough, for our kids to not get dragged into social media influencers of any kind, is why we are doing what we are doing. Amazing how much has changed since the start of this blog 17 years ago, and how few blogs there were to follow and now there are thousands of sailing influencers on youtube.)

  2. Long time reader here as well. What a journey it has been. The kids are getting so big. I enjoy your photography! Keep smiling…………..

  3. I rescued a feral cat and took it to a large open cat sanctuary. I asked them the same question: don’t these cats get in fights? They told me that as long as there were plenty of beds, perches and cubbies they get along.

    1. And if most are neutered/spayed it really slows the fights. My Rico would have had food, shelter and companionship. I still look for him when walking down our dock. So happy we were there to help.

  4. I love that narrow house! Would be fascinating to see the interior. The photo of Ouest with arms open to span (almost!) the width is a keeper.
