We’re down in Zipolite which is a beautiful, sort of away-from-it-all, type place. Unfortunately the beaches in this area are almost universally unsafe for swimming, especially for small children. However, it’s too hot and humid down here to do anything but go to the beach. So we tried a couple of different ones out, played in the shade as much as possible, and splashed around in the shallows whenever the seas let up a bit.
Oh, we also visited the Mazunte Turtle Center.

Head for the mountains (foothills of them?). It cools off considerably as you near Huatulco. There are some waterfalls to see there too. And yes, the beaches in Oaxaca are a bummer for swimming with small ones. I was afraid for Mia anytime she wasn’t attached to a surf board, except for San Diego. Pounding, big surf and some of the worst rips I have ever seen. Some people told us that the beaches in Huatulco are really nice….it is a locals destination as well and not sure if it is gringofied or not. It was sooooo much cooler once we left Zicatela and got back towards Barra.

Do you still carry a surfboard, Pat? Nothing would evoke Ali’s admiration of you like the seemingly-effortless shredding of a gnarly wave. I can’t say from experience, though, as I am a notoriously unsuccessful surfer (always wrong place, wrong time).
Yeah, I’m pretty good at carrying it under my arm as I stroll along the beach. Things start to go to hell when I put it in the water. It’s frustrating to me mainly because sports have always come pretty naturally to me. Surfing, not so much. For now I’m turning my focus on the kids—let them shred.

Thanks for the kind words, Emily. We’re using a Canon 6D now (for about the last year I suppose). We generally use the Canon 24-105mm lens, but also have a Canon 50mm, and a Canon 15mm fisheye. That’s the setup for now.
When your children are old and tell stories about their parents, my goodness, books will be written about it.

Yeah, it’s harsh on the beach in July. Inland is good, but start to miss the water after a few weeks.
