El vocho—the beetle—is alive and well in San Miguel de Allende. I love them. I know their distinctive sound and can hear them coming a block away, and I can’t resist raising the camera every time I see one.
I have fond memories of the 59′ Bug I bought, used, in Stuttgart. Drove for 3 months over there then shipped back from LA Harve. Simple engineering. The People’s Car.
My dad bought a used blue VW bug as a second car in 1960 or 61. They were so rare around here (Minnesota) that when you saw another one, you always honked or waved and if there was one in a parking lot, you parked yours next to the other one. I learned to drive in that little car and once had 8 kids in it (4 girls and 4 big football players) for the Sadie Hawkins dance because I was the only girl in the group whose parents allowed her to drive. Dad bought a new red one a couple of years later and the first car I bought was a green one. They all had oil leaks …
I love how everyone has a Bug story. Mine is only once-removed, but when I was in high school, a friend’s parents had a Bug. Because the engine sound was so distinctive, we had to push it like two blocks away before we started it (sneaking out at night; though it seems like he had tacit approval from his parents, who surely must have known).
I was surprised to discover the pedals came up from the floor, unlike other vehicles.
Perfect climate for a Type 181, Vocho, ¡Un vehiculo utilitario definitivo! Caution though, they do eat beltloops. Every pair of pants and shorts I had were missing the right beltloops from the door pin catching them.
The kids look so happy with their new digs. 😎 Fantastico.
Crazy thinking about brick and mortar for you Bum’s, but I get it. you are always able to explore whenever you want and have a home base.
My step-mother’s ’69 VW Bug was the car I learned to drive in and drove through high school. It was an ugly gray color, somehow had lost every bit of its shine, but it sure was fun to drive. Fond memories!

So… what color El Vocho are you buying? 🙂

Great photos, as always!

What about your bureau? Did you find a house? I would love to see the layout. I’m not a stalker, I am a real estate agent.
