Around Isla

Isla Mujeres is a small island. There isn’t a ton to do other than swim and eat, so that’s how we spend most of our days.

This guy ended up here during the storm a few days earlier. Not sure what the heck he was doing out on the North beach when the big north winds came flying down. He had to have seen it coming. But, despite how bad it looks to be all the way up on the beach, they managed to get him back in the water without damage. The locals here seem like they’ve done all of this many times.

Hungry? Me? Is that a taco in your hand? Hell yes I’m hungry.

A guy sets up in the plaza every night at six with these sweet rigs. Twenty-five pesos for thirty minutes. By the end of it the kids are sweaty and filthy and begging for another 30 minutes. Not a bad way to end our days.

Drive-thru marquesita.

Lowe was out paddling around in his kayak when he spotted a rat swimming along. Once he reached the boats he was pretty desperately trying to climb up into anything he could. An exhaust was going to be the most likely escape. Anyone who has ever had a rat on their boat knows how brutal they can be. They chew up everything, and specifically wiring. I stuck the boathook in the water and he quickly climbed on. I had grand plans to take him out by the dumpsters, but while walking down the dock with a rat on a stick, I drew the attention of everyone. The dockmaster spotted me, and you can imagine his response. He took the boathook, and gently carried the rat to a nearby farm to live happily ever after.

  1. I wonder if it’s the same farm that my dad said our dog went to live on when it started chasing cars in the road.

  2. We have muskrats in our marina. They can be brutal on exhausts. Our marina manager traps them and they “go to a better place”.

  3. You should look into volunteering with Isla Animals. They are always need dog walkers and people to play with puppies

    1. Sweaty, tired and ready to go home. It’s a must every time we are in the plaza at 6. They even have a friend that is there most times too, a little Mexican boy that demands that O. and L. follow him every where.

  4. they now have most of their teeth and growing like weeds….fresh air, sunshine and salt water! the cure for just about everything. you are growing them good!

  5. That is so awesome you and the dockmaster sent the rat out to greener pastures! Grin, we have a wildlife rehab institute for turkey buzzards after their wings span two phases of a 15KV line. I love the pic of the parents on the scooter with the headgear holding the baby!
Best wishes to you all – and thinks for sharing your life.

  6. Love the go-karts!!! This is the way things should be. Can you imagine in the USA trying to do the same thing. How long would it be before a busybody complained, called the police who ticketed the kids for riding on the sidewalk. And, they would ticket the guy running the business for using public property. No doubt the business would eventually fold due to a lawsuit because one of the kids skimmed a knee or ran over a toe.

This is one of the things we love about traveling. Buying an ice-cream, sitting on a bench and watching the world go by is better than 1,000 channels of TV, highspeed internet and a rush rush rush lifestyle.

    1. The kids even have their favorite (falling apart) go-karts and always have to make sure they are both available before handing over the pesos. They ride over to us, kick off their flip flops, and tear around. Great end to our not-so-rush-rush lifestyle.

  7. Our kids have also been on those bikes and what a fun time they had. Then all sweaty and dirty They went into the church behind the plaza and sat down to listen to a church service. Haha!
