Aweigh Now

With the family all reunited back on Bumfuzzle it was time for some last minute provisioning and projects.

This was one of the easiest places ever for us to stock up the boat for the season ahead. There’s a good grocery store five minutes one way, and a Wal-Mart five minutes the other. Instead of doing one big trip we just made a few trips throughout the week, usually with a theme. One day would be shampoo, toothpaste, Advil, and all that sort of stuff. Another trip for snack foods. Another for canned foods. Another for fresh stuff. About $1500 poorer the boat was as loaded as it was going to get.

A recent favorite to throw on just about anything we eat.

A quick polish was my last boat chore. Engines and everything else were done and ready to go.

The kids had four flavors of piragua left to try. We just bought them all. Not surprisingly, the last of them did not rank anywhere near the top.

Coming home to our last night in San Juan we all immediately spotted the sport-fisher cloud boat hovering over the docks.

After months of almost no activity, the docks were full of people getting ready for the weekend fishing tournament.

Off at first light, there is no better feeling than slipping the lines, and heading back to sea. A city skyline behind us, and dozens of small Caribbean islands ahead of us.

We’d been planning to head straight to Vieques, but a couple of hours in the swell on the nose had us all looking for something closer. This little island is just a couple of miles off the main island and the east coast marinas, so it’s a hot spot for the locals on the weekend. We were early enough to nab a mooring ball way at the back close enough to swim ashore, which the kids did almost immediately. It wouldn’t be until the next night that someone would come down to inform us that this is a private island and we weren’t supposed to be climbing around there. I had my doubts about that, as I believe the rule here is 50′ from high tide, but I’m not sure, and since we were planning to leave in the morning anyway I let them have their unused rocks.

Imagine owning an island whose bay looked like this every weekend?

Anyway, we’re off again. Another season begins. No idea just how much effect COVID will have on us this season. With the U.S. being the COVID world leader it seems unlikely that our U.S. flagged vessel will continue to be welcomed with open arms, but we’ll see. We’ll take our tests, keep our distance, and enjoy the view from the water as much as we can.

  1. Safe travels, Bums! I am so excited for you. Your first light pic and description gave me goosebumps! <3

    1. Thanks! The beginning of every season is magical — the off time, then the prep time, then new destination (well not this season, but hopefully at some point!).

  2. Can’t wait to see your new adventures. btw, that on-street book sale was really something. What language were most of the books in?

    1. Not exactly on-street book sale – they are there all the time, all-weather conditions. I think it is a swap only – take one, leave one. I bet it started out small, and now it takes up the entire sidewalk. We thought it was an interesting gathering place.

  3. So happy for you guys. We’ll look forward to keeping up with your adventures.

We left our boat in the Berry Islands in the Bahamas in February intending to go home a few weeks and got caught in the lockdown. Eight months later we are back on our new to us Maine Cat 41. It’s going to take some time to get it cleaned up, organized and all the systems working. We hope to be able to go sailing and at least anchor out for the next full moon. We’ll see. Things happen pretty slowly here. Living on island time.

Wishing you guys a wonderful cruising season.

    1. So happy for you guys as well! Been seeing your posts on FB. Good job on the month clean-up and outta there. Always the toughest, kind of fun, time.

Merry Cruising Season, and Christmas, friends!

  4. Safe travels guys. Look forward to your future posts. We really thought by now that we would have caught up with you guys but as Winter approaches we are still locked down by closed borders in South Korea.

    1. Awww that reminds me I need to dig those out. I should have been trying when we were at the condo over the summer. Shoot! Getting them out now. Thanks, Lonnie-Breeze.
