I know I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s funny how even running mundane chores in town here can lift your spirits if you lift your head up and look around. The best ATM in town for us happens to be right here on the main plaza. Nothing like grabbing a fistful of 500s and walking out the door to this morning view.
We had parent/teacher conferences again, and were happy to hear nothing but good things. Those pics were from a neighborhood photography assignment of Lowe’s. The kids have had a good first year. They never complain about school, they get their work done, they learn a few things, and they hang out with friends. It’s been an easy transition for them, and despite all their years of unschooling, the actual schooling itself hasn’t been a challenge at all. They’ve breezed through the year and had zero issues with equivalency exams. I know a lot of parents worry about such things when contemplating life on the road or the seas, but honestly I’d be more worried about not taking your kids away for a few years.
On any given day in San Miguel…
Ali finally found a desk for herself. Not a bad cubicle to run things from, although the commute is two flights of stairs.
Brushing up on my algebra with Lowe. Fortunately, there isn’t much homework from their school, and what little there is tends to take just a few minutes.
Ali’s begun feeding the pigeons, doves, and any others that can fight their way into the dish.
It’s Jacaranda season again and purple is exploding all over San Miguel.
We’re a year in to hunting for furniture and slowly beginning to fill in the blanks. The house should be full just about the time we’re ready to leave for another boat.

My mother, Mildred Brown your lovely mother’s neighbor in Portland just LOVED the Jacaranda trees. She bought one and planted it in her back yard. I wonder if it’s still there🥰
Hi Jacquie. Your mom was a gem. We still bring up “Millie” sometimes when talking about the old Portland neighborhood. If your mom planted a Jacaranda I’m sure it’s still there and bigger and healthier than anything else around.
I have been reading you for years, (friends with Ali’s parents)….. The only thing I don’t like is when an update ends….. I am so interested in your daily life, and i can’t wait for the next entry…. I am so proud of how you have raised your children. They get real life, not as seen on TV. They will go very far with both of your insites. The Pictures, your words… Inspiring.
Hi Triva, it’s been a long time. Hope you’re doing well! Thanks for the nice comment.
Glad to hear your kids are doing well in school. Is instruction in Spaniish or English ?
Both. The kids are bilingual.
You need to keep the house and get a canoe.
I’m not sure if we can all sleep in a canoe, but… maybe.
I love that fireplace. Do you use it? The house looks great and the furniture suits you.
Yes, it’s a gas fireplace. It gets used in the mornings for about two-three months out of the year when it’s cool enough. Too warm most of the time, though.
