Getting It Done

Last night was Ouest’s first night in a real bed. Not that she doesn’t have a full size bed on the boat, but there she has the lee cloth to keep her in. Here we just threw the mattress in a corner and pushed the dresser up against the side leaving her just the one end to climb in and out. She thought it was awesome and couldn’t wait to go to bed. Great. So in the middle of the night she suddenly calls out for me. This isn’t that uncommon, she usually just wants her blankets put back on her. But instead I found her on the floor at the foot of the bed. I figured she crawled off so I just picked her up, laid her back down, covered her up, and backed out of the room. She went right to sleep. This morning when she woke up I realized she hadn’t just crawled out of bed, she had taken a digger, probably walking right off of it. She had blood all over her. Her chin was split open. Not terribly, but enough to spread a nice amount of red around. The girl is tough.

Spent the day on the boat plugging away at the list. The water hoses are all replaced, the tanks were cleaned just recently, and the whole system is smelling and tasting wonderful again. Feels good to start fresh.

During that project I learned something new. I was just about finished with the job, I just needed to go out and buy two more hose clamps. But I was anxious to see if everything was working properly so I flicked the water pressure switch on and stood back. What I failed to remember to do was to turn on at least one of the faucets. So I stood there listening to the pump crank away until BOOM, one of the hoses without the hose clamp exploded off the fitting it was on. Since I hadn’t opened the system it was pumping the lines full of air instead of pushing water through. It was surprisingly loud when that thing blew and I thought for sure something serious had happened. Fortunately not because I was in no mood to repair anything that wasn’t on the list.

Installed a cockpit fresh water washdown/shower. I can’t believe we even thought about going cruising without a way to rinse off with fresh water outside. Just one more t-fitting and that is off the list.

Fixed the mount for the refrigerator compressor. Three out of the four bolts were spinning freely making it impossible to tighten the compressor up. This was a new development, not the cause of the compressor breaking in the first place.
