Guadalajara

Today was just a walking around town sort of day. We wandered the plazas, visited a museum, and took a carriage ride.

It’s winter in the mountains. Scarfs, gloves, poofy jackets, they are all on display right now. You’d think it was twenty-five degrees, not seventy.

Nothing says luxury like a stretched Beetle.

The guy sitting on the ladder confused us for a minute. Then we noticed there was another just a little further over. These are, in fact, the store’s security personnel.

Like, “Here, I did this, now can you take care of it, please?”

All right, maybe we’re all getting to be little wimps when it comes to the weather.

Ouest laid down in Frida’s bed, looked in the mirror above her head, and proceeded to draw just like Frida. She even include the unibrow. Before we went into the museum she whispered to Ali that she wishes she had eyebrows like Frida Kahlo.

The kids were all gung-ho about the carriage ride, remembering it from the last time we were here. So we loaded in and trotted off for our thirty minute tour of Centro. About ten minutes into it they both started asking, “How much longer before we can be done?” The shine had definitely worn off of the carriage. We won’t be doing that again.

Birria de Chivo. Goat stew. So much better than it sounds. Not a family favorite, though. I’m pretty much on my own with this one.

I’ve talked about how innocent my kids are, but today Lowe set a good example. We were sitting in a restaurant and out on the sidewalk was this comic book stand. Lowe’s seat was facing it. He sat there a minute and then said, “Can I sit on that side? I don’t like looking at the bad guys.”

  1. Great post. I’ve wanted to visit Guadalajara for a long time. The picture of the three lying back looking at the ceiling in the church is just perfect – I can’t think of a better way to represent the life you guys are living – just kicking back and soaking in the day. I’m jealous. Keep it up.

  2. So good to see Lowe keeping up the family tradition of the family-portrait-don’t-everybody-look-at-the-camera!

  3. Just found you through a friend. Told him I’ve been reading your blog all day now. Great Blog! Is there a specific post on the RV? Love the pics!

  4. yeah, life can be pretty simple here. my 14yo is in 2do of secundaria. after a recent school function she motioned to the roof and said the kids from prepa were up there “smoking crack”. stunned we kept asking, “crack?” really, “CRACK”? Finally, disgusted with us she said, “yes! Crack! you know, WEED!” Geez! (heart attacks averted)

  5. Once again, great photos! We are house sitting in Canada right now, so 70 degrees in Guadalajara sounds just fine to me 🙂 Enjoy the nice weather!

  6. I really thought I’d miss all the sailing posts when you guys moved your adventure inland, but I love reading your travels, and the photography just gets better and better every year. Thanks for keeping up with the blogging! I’m not able to travel far and wide right now, so this is such a treat.

    1. Hey Hollie,

Thanks. It’s funny, when we sold the first boat we thought the blog page views would slow down, but they only increased with the VW. Then when we got back onto the boat they went up again. And now they are as high as they’ve ever been. It’s nice to know that there is something besides just the particular adventure that we’re on that people are enjoying following along.

      1. If I may venture an opinion: much, I’m guessing, of your readers’ enjoyment has to do with the attitude you guys bring to both the adventures, and to blogging. You guys have a laid-backedness and aversion to the norm that is really appealing, but you balance that with being responsible parents who have put a lot of thought into what you want for your kids (we have a boy and a girl, 13 and 11 – I wish they had even a third of the experiences Lowe and Ouest have!).

I really like how you guys don’t compromise. You do your own thing. The blog’s message feels like you write because you enjoy sharing the adventures, not because you need the internet to approve (Ha! Even years later, I still come across on some sailing forums a message about those crazy Bumfuzzle people who just left without any experience). The right things are kept private, but so much of what you guys see is served up for the readers to soak their eyes in. It’s a model I really respect, and it’s SO inspiring. Never in my idle hours do I think about Mexico, but then I read one of your posts and I start wanting to pack us all some backpacks and check airline schedules.

But instead, we’re saving for a Flicka 20, so I can cram my family in like sardines, and force them to visit the San Juan Islands and the lovely intracoastal waterways of SW Canada. Hopefully in a few years everyone can come to my blog and enjoy pictures of the kids looking miserable, and me and Greg saying, “Put down your iPads! Look up! ENJOY THE FJORDS, DAMMIT!”

        1. Thanks a lot for that, Hollie. Now get that Flicka and pack them in. Oh, and maybe accidentally knock the iPads overboard. (BTW, that Flicka is a sweet looking little boat.)
