Hawksbill Turtle

Little goofing around before we head off for a day of diving.

We see a lot of turtles, but this is the first Hawksbill we’ve spotted here in St. Croix.

The kids on a garbage hunt. It’s not entirely altruistic. They do ask if we’ll pay them before they go scavenging. I suppose it could be better defined as entrepreneurial.

Our artistic abilities are horrendous. The fact that I somehow get pulled in when something needs to be “really good” says it all.

Ali is the best at hiding things away for a while, then suddenly bringing them out and setting them on the table one day. The kids are on it immediately as if it is a brand new family gift.

This dog came wandering up to us and promptly flopped down in the shade. Ali poured her water and she drank down the entire bottle. We hung out for half an hour or so, Ali petting and talking to her the whole time, when a girl from down the beach walked up and said, “Come on girl, time to go.” The dog stood up and they climbed in their car to go home.

  1. Dogs just know where the love is. Rascals but irresistible. This is the best batch of photos in a while, all charming as hell. Thanks, it’s been a while since I’ve dived on coral. xo

  2. Hiya – I noticed you’re using your phone as a wifi hotspot. Not to intrude, but can you share a bit about your tech setup? Do you use a wifi booster, I wonder?

    1. We do have a cheap wifi booster, but we almost never have wifi. We have two Google Fi unlimited accounts (though they aren’t really unlimited since they throttle at 22gb and are not usable beyond that), and we have local data plans. For the past few months we’ve had a local wireless company (one of the big 3 you would know) with two unlimited lines (which actually do appear to be mostly unlimited).

The thing you see in that picture is a phone with a local SIM card in it. Their unlimited plan doesn’t include tethering, so if you do use a phone or a hotspot to link to your laptop it is throttled back to 3G speeds. I use an app called PDANet, which allows me to tether a phone to a laptop and hide that fact, so that I can get high speed LTE on the computer.

  3. Thanks for the reply. Your setup makes sense. I’m curious to see how Elon Musk’s Starlink system will evolve. It looks very promising.

    1. We can’t wait for Starlink. We’re building a house in a rural area that has no broadband internet available yet; it’s satellite or slow DSL. REALLY hoping Starlink will fly. Also great for cruisers and RVers, of course.

  4. Can you stream Netflix with your set-up? If so you may enjoy this show we just watched about a local eatery there called Louie & Nachos? Season 2, Episode 6 of Restaurants on the Edge on Netflix!! Not just about the food, some fun factoids on island culture & history. The Moko Jumbies look like fun for kids to learn about-just a thought! Enjoy following your water adventures-great to see you all smiling & having fun together!
    Love the pix too! Cheers!

  5. You have a mobile phone now? Times have changed for the bums. The pups love Ali! i was reminded of Libre. As always, thanks for sharing your life with all these strangers. I’ve been following since the beginning and you’re all inspiring. I’ve tried many new things because of your blog.
