Horsing Around

Varnish work continues around the boat, and we continue to go about life in the middle of it all. Though we are leaving soon for inland travels, we wanted to be around while work got going on Bumuzzle.

The marina is across a small bay from the main part of town. So a few minutes of each day are spent hanging out on the docks waiting for the launcha.

Hiking up to the natural pool for a late afternoon cool down.

The horses came trotting straight up to us like we were old friends. We left them with promises of apples on our next visit.

What happens when the water isn’t quite as clear as last time.

There are small marinas with restaurants scattered all over the place. Brunos has rickety docks, and a good fish sandwich.

We were back to the horses the next day, apples in hand. After the pack of dogs headed off after the girl in heat, the horses wandered down to say hello again.

This is the friendliest horse I’ve ever seen. Comes straight over to us, snuggles up to Ali, and eats gently off of the kids palms. Everyone seemed convinced somehow that this particular horse didn’t have any teeth because of the way it seemed to gum up the apples out of their hands. Then he opened up to show his giant brown teeth and foot long tongue and the kids squealed. Our cute old horse suddenly didn’t seem so cute.

The kids like to race me across the bridge. My job is to make it bounce to the point that they fall down in heaps, then run past them.

This place has become our favorite in town. Thin hunks of pork, rice, pasta salad, beans, and piles of thick tortillas crisped up just right, all for 20Q ($3) per plate. Bonus, they have horchata as well.

First coats of varnish are going on. Should look like a wood mirror by the time ten coats are on.

This is the table on our top deck that required hand sanding each and every one of those little holes. I imagine Grand Banks didn’t consider that when they built it in 1986 and put that first coat of varnish on nice bare wood.

  1. Awesome post! If you meed recommendations or contacts for inland adventures, i may be able to help in the highlands, Quiche- Ixil triangle area. Beautiful.

  2. Those horses look as if they have plenty of lush grass to eat. I have three here in the USA with no lush grass as we are in S California, just alfalfa hay . Thanks for another round of wonderful pictures and descriptions of your adventures.

  3. Haven’t checked in on you guys for a while, and now you are in one of my favourite travel places. I hope you enjoy Guatemala. Isn’t it amazing watching the kids grow?
