La Antigua

The El Carmen market spills out of the building some days. It’s really just the setting of the market that sets it apart. The stuff for sale is pretty standard market tourist gear, which doesn’t necessarily make it any less enjoyable to stroll around.

There are so many church ruins in Antigua that you can’t even find names for many of them. I can’t even begin to fathom why a place with maybe 60,000 people at its peak in the 1770s could have needed so many places to pray. There must have been seating for ten times that many. What a site this city would have made back then, though. Earthquakes throughout the 1700s did serious damage to all of them, and time did the rest.

Feeling too lazy to walk up the hill? Grab a tuk-tuk.

We’ve had virtually perfect weather in Guatemala. Turns out rainfall is way down this year, which is great for us, but not so much for everyone else. We had yet another clear blue sky day for the view over town from Cerro de La Cruz.

Templo Santa Teresa de Jesus is right around the corner from us. A pretty place to wander around, with hardly any other people around. Every one of these sites around town cost about 40Q to get in. Every time we go to one they try to charge us for the kids, but I say no just two tickets, and then they ask how old the kids are before they do a fake head slap like they have made such a silly mistake and they only charge us two adults. Honestly, I’m not even sure what the rules are really supposed to be, but I enjoy the game of charades and how uniformly it is played between sites.

Definitely one of my favorite pieces. The eyes are exactly how every drawing of a face I’ve ever made looks.

When there’s a volcano looming over town it’s hard not to include it in every photo.

Sunday traffic jam in Antigua. We’re only a bit more than an hour outside of Guatemala City, so the town becomes very popular on the weekends.

Still kids.

  1. Hi Guys – long time no communication and your family is now grown up! It seems all is going well for you all.
We have spent the last two summers cruising the Med, the Aegean and the Adriatic on Free & BrEasy. Fantastic trip – so much history everywhere. I wanted to stay another year and go through Turkey into the Black Sea and on to Armenia from where Annabelle’s family originate but we brought the boat back to Florida where it currently sits on the hard for the hurricane season.
I have not looked into your website in detail yet so dont know exactly what you are up to so if you have moment it would be good to hear from you.
We are still in Winnipeg and running our property and will probably go back to the Caribbean this winter all being well.
    Best wishes to you both.
    Roger and Annabelle
