Mazatlan Tour Guides

This is the third or fourth time Ali’s parents have visited us in Mazatlan. On this visit Ali and I realized just how much this place feels like a hometown to us now. We have at least a dozen restaurants that we like. We’ve got the market for all our fruit, vegetable, tamale, taco, and horchata needs. If we need a part for the bus we know where to go. We know who to ask if we need something that only a local would know how to lay hands on. We know exactly what each grocery store has and doesn’t have. We know what a taxi ride cost anywhere in town, and where each bus goes as well. In fact, we know this town better now than we do the town we grew up in. All of which makes us pretty good Mazatlan tour guides if I do say so myself.

So despite the mostly gray skies the past few days we managed to wander around and eat/drink our way through much of Mazatlan. We squeezed in a little pool and beach time as well. I sometimes wonder if we lived in, say, Omaha, if we would see our family nearly as much as we do living in Mexico.

  1. Some green AstroTurf and pink flamingos would be a nice touch when sitting outside the bus under the awning.

  2. Absolutely love the picture of the door into the overgrown garden. It draws me in. Photo contest quality there.

  3. I think you are right about Omaha, I have lived here over 42 years and family from Texas have visited only 3 times. Now that I have an apartment in Puerto Vallarta, everyone is asking when they can come to visit!

  4. I am so loving your visit to Mazatlan. You pictures are incredible and you are bringing back so many memories for me. We were there on our sailboat in ’97 and ’98 and still think of going back someday. I wish I could remember where the best Pazole was but it is probably gone now anyway. That is a lot of years!

  5. How many pictures do you take so you can whittle it down to these best shots? I’d have to take 1000 in a day to get this many good ones. It seems like every single picture you take is terrific.

    1. I take way too many. Close to 100 a day probably. My biggest problem is clicking the shutter five times in a row when just the first one would have sufficed. If I stopped doing that I could cut it down to maybe 30. And hey, thanks for the compliment.

      1. One of the few great things about digital technology, the ability to just erase the bad ones. If only other mistakes in life were as easily erased!

  6. My husband and I are planning our next vacation to Mexico and will visit Mazatlan this time. I would love to get a recommendation for a reasonable (not fancy) place to stay. Restaurants and other must see/must do suggestions would be very appreciated.

    1. We usually rent condos or houses as they tend to be less expensive and more interesting than staying in a hotel. Try vrbo.com or homeway.com. For some more Mazatlan inspiration check out this little site I put together, http://www.roundmexico.com. Have fun.
