Mexico Mailman

Today I had one of those “only in Mexico” moments. There is a small mailbox on the side of a building at the entrance of town. Before we put a few postcards in there back in November I asked the lady working at the mobile phone shop next door if anybody actually picked up the mail from there.

She assured me it was good, so we dropped our postcards in. Six weeks later, and the mailbox was now stuffed full. I poked my head in the phone shop again. She said to ask next door at the small convenience store.

I grabbed a beer and walked up to the counter. I asked the guy if anybody ever picks up the mail from that mailbox and he assured me someone does. I then asked, “Who?”

“The guy that delivers envelopes.”

“It’s been at least six weeks.”

Shoulder shrug.

I asked, “Who has the key for the box?”

“Me.”

“Well, is it okay if I take the mail out and bring it to the post office?” Ali was going to be driving right by there on her way to the dentist, anyway.

“Sure.”

He then opened the mailbox and handed me about fifty postcards and letters. I suspect that in the States we would both be facing ten years right about now. Note: I discovered later that there was no cash in any of the letters.

My dad is gone. I suspect that because of the Vikings loss to Seattle I won’t hear from him for at least a month.

We had a windy, cloudy day, and decided it was time to watch a movie. The Peanuts can get pretty intense sometimes.

  1. Once I mistakenly dropped a bank deposit in a mail box. I waited for the carrier to pick it up. He wouldn’the give me the deposit envelope. I followed him to the post office and an hour later got turned down by the P O Manager, even though he had my deposit in his hand (it had no stamps). It too 26 days to get delivered to me.
Mexico is So Sweet! I miss the simplicity…

  2. Your comment reply about the “check in the mail” is spot on! Hahhaa!
Even with dropping postcards in the mail at the actual post office, I had postcards arriving to folks in the States anywhere from 2-6 months later. Some didn’t arrive at all! Lost in a black hole somewhere I would imagine…
We also had some care packages sent to us in Mexico that were returned to sender 1 year later! Wow… the Mexican postal service may be slow but at least they were efficient in their return process 😉

  3. We went to the peanuts movie at Christmas. Popcorn & Pop, my son was in heaven. That is all he talks about now. Even though he hates the food, he wants to go to McDonald’s now to get the toy in the happy meal. When I told my friends about the movie , they all said they wanted to see it too. What a tribute to Schultz, from my Grandfather to his great grandson, everyone loves Charlie Brown.
