More Travco Work

Not a whole lot to say at the moment. The walls are done, but I’ve still got the closet doors and the entrance door to do. Actually I did one of the closet doors today—it took me forever. The next two should go much more smoothly. I’ve still got all of the trim work to do as well. And let’s not forget the floor.

Yet it still feels like we’re getting there quickly now. The floor will be here in a couple of days and should only take a few hours to lay out. All the seating is in the process of being reupholstered and should be done in just a few days. We got a sneak peak of the first finished seat and it looks amazing. Ali nailed the color.

Despite all the work that has been involved, and the terrible working conditions, I have to say that I’m getting a lot of satisfaction from this job. I’ve often thought that building a tiny house from the ground up would be fun, and this is sort of fitting that role. I’m also very excited about getting out on the road with the kids and really immersing them once again in the natural world all around us.

I should also mention that the original owners of the bus have been tracked down. The lady we bought the bus from did some sleuthing and found both the husband and wife. She even spoke to them. Anyway, they are at their winter home right now but will search out some old pics once they get back to their summer place in the spring. Cool. Thanks to the many others who did some searching for us as well.

  1. It is looking so very nice! I must say, you’re really a talented person. Liked the “teaser” about the color Ali picked out! Can’t wait to see it.
    Be well, be happy, Valerie

  2. Have you reached a decision yet on number and type (AGM, gel cell, lithium ion, lithium iron , etc.) batteries for the Bus?

    1. No, actually I haven’t. Originally I thought I’d just get two AGMs like on the boat (the boat actually had four), but now I’m contemplating a couple of golf cart 6v batteries instead. Will decide in the next few days.

      1. Could you share any insight as to why you want to go with Lead technology? 30% usable capacity isn’t much and Lead is heavy, which directly translates to fuel consumption..

        1. No I couldn’t, really. It’s what I’ve always used. It’s always worked perfectly. And I have neither the time nor the desire to learn the intricacies of battery technology.

  3. the kids’ bunks (or are those the bunks? i’m assuming they are the bunks) looks FAB. you are really making me want to do a re-do of of our Alaskan Camper because your details are so out of sight. And useful.

    1. Originally we’d hoped to make actual bunks, one on top of the other, but there just wasn’t enough height. So yeah, Lowe gets to be up a little bit on the side, and Ouest gets the other one in the middle.

  4. Your work looks great! The kids prove you don’t need a lot of expensive fancy toys to have creative playtime. Will you paint the exterior the original colors? I am seeing lots of family time wherever the road leads.

    1. There are actually three beds in the living space. Just like on the boat, we’ll have to fold beds down and make the sheets every night and morning. Honestly though we haven’t given any thought to our own sleeping arrangements. We’ve spent so many years sleeping on oddly shaped, small, lumpy beds, that we don’t really worry much about it any more.
