Perfect Mix

We’re staying in downtown Puerto Vallarta right now, but pristine surf beaches are still only a short drive away.

Lowe’s been wanting a cart for a while, so we hit the Home Depot, picked up some wheels and plywood, and built this. We’re in testing phase-one now, deciding what else to add to it. If we had a house we’d be building racing go-karts right now instead, but this will have to do for now.

Downtown Puerto Vallarta. The hills start just a couple of blocks in from the ocean. By about four blocks in, this is what you have.

In all our years in PV we’d never been up to this mirador. It’s nothing but a small white cross, but clearly someone had bigger ambitions. There is a funicular (not running), an overlook with bathrooms (not running), and some sort of three-story concrete stairway for small children to fall off of. Nice views, and a nice breeze up there.

Mexico is full of murals in the most unlikely places.

I always think Puerto Vallarta is so photogenic. Everywhere you look there are pops of color and cleanliness amidst decay.

La Lancha surf break. A guard actually sits in the woods up by the trail entrance to ensure that people going down here have a surfboard with them. Some developer bought it a while back and kicked everybody out, but the surfers fought for their access. It was a little blown out this day, but still pretty glorious. What a fantastic way to spend an afternoon with friends.

    1. Surprisingly, summer is holding off a couple extra weeks this year. It hasn’t gotten hot yet, and the daily rain showers haven’t begun. The lack of greenery (relatively speaking) is a testament to it.

  1. I lived on my boat year round for almost 3 years in Marina Vallarta when it was vibrant and beautiful. You just took me on a walk down memory lane. I miss walking that city. I walked and walked there back in the ’90’s. Took buses just to see where they went (we didn’t have a car). Now I have forgotten most of the names of places. Pictures like yours are gifts to my soul! Thank you!

  2. I’m with Shelagh. I’ve been following your site for many years and that ballerina photo is perhaps the most striking one yet!

  3. That mural. My eyes.

Love the updates, BumFam. Love me some PV.

Favorite trip there was on a cruise ship, we opted to Ike into the hills with a backpack of beer…..was treated to the best meal of fresh fish in my life, grilled on an upside down shopping cart. Got a tour of the 5 story domicile. I could live there. Still in contact with the Ramirez family today.

    ¡Mucho gusto!

  4. Yup, another post that does not disappoint! The mural picture just took my breath away. Such talent, hidden, as you said, amongst the chaos. Love it and we miss us our Mexico and our VW Westie……..

    1. That thing looked like it had been finished the day before. Just popped, and up in a neighborhood so far up the hill you have to walk to your house. You couldn’t even get a motorcycle up there.

    1. It was a good day for taking pictures. 🙂 Puerto Vallarta is always like that. Just get off the malecon (the street along the waterfront) and venture a couple blocks inland to the neighborhoods.

  5. Tacos al pastor vendor perhaps the most beautiful photograph ever…on so many levels.
    ❤️ ? ?
PS I have an I Love Tacos shirt too.

      1. Would it be the table cloth with french on it with the name Ouest. I saw the tablecloth and name right away and thought where on earth did they get that. Years in retail you notice weird details.

  6. I was just there last week, too! You captured so much and it was fun seeing it through your eyes. I, too, love the ballerina photo!
