San Marcos

Sunrises over Lake Atitlan have been pretty dramatic. The view from the bedroom porch is fantastic. I think I’ll always prefer ocean views, but mix a big lake in with mountains and volcanoes and we’ve got a pretty good combination going.

We headed across the lake to San Marcos, one of the many villages dotting the lake. Over 5,000 feet in elevation, clear blue skies, warm air, and cool water. The main draw of San Marcos is the nature reserve.

There are parts of the lake I wouldn’t dip a toe in, and others like this that are clear and sparkling.

I had to play the mean dad and not allow the kids to make this jump. Not sure the height, but must have been around 35 feet. High enough that I took the advice offered and went with the hands above the head style jump. Ouest came over to me beaming with pride afterwards. She said, “That guy up there said you made it look so easy.” As a father I like to try and tuck all those little moments of adoration away, so I can remember them later on in life.

We found a nice spot down lower for some cliff diving.

  1. Hi Bums, I’ve commented here before..and actually my daughter Hazel exchanged a letter or two with Ouest a couple of years ago. BUT I wanted to say we are FINALLY working to make my husbands dream come true. We’ve almost purchased the boat. I say almost because we have a debate going about which boat, a Valiant or a Hinckley. After the purchase we’ll do some shorter trips here and then my husband is retiring at 55 (so about 2 years). Yay! It’s exciting and daunting but I’ve been watching you all for so many years that I know we can do it. We’ll take our daughters out of school and hopefully live life to it’s fullest!!

    1. Awesome, Sara and James!! Happy for your family. You got this. Hope we can share an anchorage at some point. Keep us posted.
