Saying Goodbye to the Bus

My birth mother and one of my sisters came down to visit for a couple of days. This was the first time we had met Hallie, but it didn’t take the kids long to warm up to her.

Ouest tells us she wishes she could have a mustache, so we gave her one.

Hallie is closer in age to my kids than she is to me, so it was only natural that she would be the one to introduce them to Snapchat.

The final wash.

The couple that bought the bus are longtime Bum friends and were super excited to get behind the wheel and hit the road. They flew up from the Bay area, we had a nice lunch, went over as many things as we could think about on the bus, and then handed them the keys.

Three seconds after taking this picture a dog ran across the street in front of them and they had to slam on the brakes. With that little test out of the way they were able to carry on down the road.

Selling the bus was hard—we all love the bus. But we just know ourselves too well to think that we would take off on a new adventure for a year, or two, or three, and then come back to it. We’ve got too many different adventures on our life’s to-do list to do that. And, frankly, we’ve never paid to store any belonging, and we couldn’t bring ourselves to start now. So, even though it was hard, we ripped the band-aid off, cried about the pain for a few minutes, and in no time at all, it felt better. It was a relief to have it out of the driveway and be able to move on and focus on what’s next.

Ouest gave the bus a big hug, and we explained to both of them that the bus would get to go on new adventures now, and not have to sit around waiting for us to come back. They were fine with it, and since it drove away we haven’t heard another word about “Papa’s Blue Bus.”

  1. Love the last photo. Our own US royalty . . .Prince Lowe and Princess Ouest, royal pup and all. Great shot. Boo hoo about the bus, but owned and upward. The fun continues.

    1. I had removed a couple of zip ties when I was pulling out the broken speedo cable. Forgot to replace them before driving off to take pictures that day. A couple wires got wrapped around the steering column, snapped in two, and left us stranded because I didn’t have any tools left in the bus. Only a couple miles from my mom’s house, though, and I had us running again in a couple hours.

  2. It’s sad to sell a bus that your family enjoyed, but a relief to sell a boat, no matter how much fun you had in it. Says something about choosing to travel by land rather than water. Just so much less hassle.

  3. Ahhhh guys we love our new bus..She is perfect and so much fun to drive !! We promise to give her a great home and take her on lots of cool adventures..Thanks for the inspiration over the years..You guys seriously rock !!! Love the pics !!! xx
