SS Sapona

We left Bimini with just a tiny sliver of a weather window, setting out for the nearby SS Sapona wreck in the rain. The Sapona is pretty awesome, sitting in just 15 feet of water, it’s easy to anchor right alongside. We jumped in and swam around it a bit. The kids took the kayaks over, then went for a swim to see the fish. Unfortunately, the stormy conditions chopped the sea up a bit and made the whole exercise a bit trying. It was still fun, though, for the kids to dive their first wreck—a cargo/casino/rum warehouse/Navy gunnery practice, wreck from 1926.

These boats were diving hammerhead sharks just outside of Bimini.

Closing in on 100 years that it’s been sitting here like this. Pretty amazing.

  1. So are you as happy with your mantus as we are? I have gotten so spoiled by just dropping it and expecting it to set right away every time, like it does. Maybe just lucky.

    1. Yeah, I’m happy with the Mantus. Though it didn’t grab at the Sapona “anchorage.” The bottom was just hard scoured with virtually no sand on top. I found out quickly with this anchor not to even begin backing down on the anchor until I’ve got the snubber on the chain. It grabs so quickly and hard that I’ll pull the windlass right off the boat.

    1. Once we saw a small weather window we headed for Chub Cay, on the southern tip of the Berry Islands (see next post). Where we got pinned down for some more wind. Would be great if we could just buzz around to all the islands but the weather this year is “off” – grey, cool and windy.

  2. Love the juxtaposition of your nice yacht next to the wreck, and the colorful kids kayaks by the rust.
Enjoying your reports from the Bahamas, brings back many memories and can’t wait to get there with our little one!
