To Market

We went to the market this morning where I thought about asking the boy selling fish and turtles how much he would charge me to take back Banana Ice Cream Goldfish, but I didn’t because Ali loves that thing, even if she won’t admit it. She changed her water this morning and spent the rest of the day talking about how active the fish was now thanks to all of that fresh oxygen in the water (thank-you Google for providing us with way more information that is necessary for a two dollar fish).

Also, you should hear how adorable it is when a Mexican boy says guppy. Goopy.

Ouest has changed pretty dramatically this month. She’s gone from a rather shy little girl to a girl who is willing to put herself out there a bit. There is a handsome white-haired old man who drives a taxi and waits for fares all day on a nearby corner. He always says good morning to the kids and Ali always prods Ouest to say hello. Well a couple of days ago Ouest initiated the greetings with her very own, “Hola.” Everyone was delighted. Then today I was walking with her down the street and pointed the man out to her. He’d already spotted us and was watching and smiling. Ouest looked across the street and gave an immediate smile and wave. I could go on and on about how she is suddenly willing to walk right up to kids and ask their names, “Como se llama?” And oh my god is it cute when she says that. It’s fun to see this confidence in her.

  1. Hello Pat & Ali,

Normally I don’t comment on blogs but I was turned on to your site back in 2011 while on tour in Afghanistan. I have since followed your shenanigans off and on for the past few years.

I really like your new layout and truly enjoy your writing style. It was a factor in my decision to retire and try out this sailing thing.

Perhaps one day we will cross paths and I can buy you a beer. I am off in Aug to begin my own adventure and have know idea what I am doing. Should be fun.

I look forward to reading more of your posts.

    1. I always start to worry when I don’t hear from them in a while. Hopefully their computer is down and not something serious.

  2. There are plenty of Internet cafes in Mex, wonder what’s going on …? Really really hope you guys are ok.

        1. yeah, you didn’t give us a clue you were gonna be on the move again!
