Turtle’s Pace

Still completely unsure of what our plans are for the coming months, we’re happy to have been able to settle for a bit in St. Croix.

We left Christiansted planning to spend the day an hour away in Cane Bay doing a couple of dives.

Cane Bay

When we got there the swell was really running through the bay and making it really rough on the boat. We decided to stick it out and went off for our first dive. Lots of coral, though not much color at all, and surprisingly little of interest as far as marine life. The weather had gone dark and rainy, and the boat motion was horrible so we decided to bail on the place before our second dive. We dropped the dive gear off on shore and took off. We had been planning to return to Christiansted, but decided to just run downwind around to Frederiksted instead.

Snorkeling around the boat we spotted this ugly guy. Scorpionfish are some of the world’s most venomous, a fact I only discovered now as I googled him. Note, look closely, the black and yellow angelfish is not him.

Still more scuba. We’re racking up the dive experience while we’re here.

Scuba Pier

The friendly resident seahorse was at his post.

The green sea turtles all hang around in the same area. You don’t see them very often by the boats on the other side of the pier, but they are always in this spot.

Sadly, this one looks like she had a run-in with a boat. We got in touch with the sea turtle rescue group here on St. Croix, and they told us they had found her like this last week and were keeping an eye on her. So far at least, she seems to be behaving normally.

  1. Is Ouest making pancake batter in the shot of her in the galley? I see vegetable oil, milk, baking powder and what looks like a bowl of flour.

    1. They did the bubble maker (kids pool session) at ages 10 and 8 in Honduras. This year at ages 9 and 11, they are junior open water PADI certified. Same learning as everyone has to do but has a few restrictions for kids about depths, and going with an adult PADI certified. Pretty amazing how awesome they are!

  2. Love reading your posts in frosty Scotland! Due to COVID, had no cruises for almost 2 years now so I’m happy to journey with you.
    All best wishes

    1. Yes, Bonaire! Already watching weather and necessary COVID rules. The gang want to get their wreck certificates over there!

  3. Pat,
What happened to your account, I couldn’t access it for three days? Went to my Verizon store and they indicated the problem was on your end.
    Thanks,
    Dick

  4. Glad to see the site back up. My Firefox for the last few days have been going off like a siren. 404 Not found. Beware; dangerous site. Yeah, right.

Glad to see everyone hale and steady.

  5. Site was down as the hosting service migrated us to a new server. Wasn’t supposed to be any down time, so I suppose a 48 hour outage is about what I’d expect.

    1. And still no emails – ugh. Get on it, Pat! 🙂

(don’t you love it when couples talk in comments (or texts) when they are sitting right across the table from each other. ha ha)
