Uxmal

The day didn’t start off so hot when we walked out of the hotel to find our tire flat. In Mexico they offer you roadside assistance for a few bucks a day on your rental car, which I always turn down, so we whipped out the spare and were rolling inside of fifteen minutes. We popped into the first tire place we spotted. The mechanic was working on another car, so it took about an hour, but he repaired the tire and put it back on for us for 100 pesos (~$5). Back in business we headed for Uxmal.

Uxmal is a beautiful site. Nice and compact, too. Really cool to imagine these places filled with color and life 1,000 years ago. Good reminder that nothing lasts forever, not even our cities and sprawling suburban neighborhoods.

Looking for bats. Tentatively. I was able to make them jump five feet in the air a while later while peeking into another dark door.

Lately we can’t help making fun of the Instagram culture surrounding all of these places. Which, I suppose, by posting our silly pics on here puts us firmly in the same group. [Note: we do not post on Instagram ourselves.]

We headed over to the Hacienda San Pedro Ochil for lunch. More good food, and an amazing property. Makes me wish I could transport back in time to own and live on a hacienda of my own.

Out in the boonies were a couple more cenotes for us to check out. There are literally hundreds/thousands of these around the Yucatan. There is no better way to refresh on a hot day.

On the way back out to the highway we passed through a beautiful tiny village. Hammocks, in place of mattresses, hung scattered from wall to wall in each home, kids by the dozens hung out and played in groups, puppies walked down the street alongside ducks, and once bright paint peeled and wore away on every building, like the ruins we’d been visiting everywhere.

  1. wondering if your younguns will revisit these places as adults…and their perceptions…what was real and/or imagined? goodonyas…go forth and make more memories! as before, saying…”cruiser kids have a unique perspective”! most very grounded and self-aware. good stuff…

  2. Uxmal ruins are stunning and impressive. The local area photos are also lovely. Your kids have so many great memories so early in life.

  3. During your travel abouts, you really should see the ruins at Palenque. Awesome. Nice area and many nice B&B’s and rustic hotels. Also, down the road is Agua Azul, a fantastic river, lakes, many many waterfalls, all encompassing a huge area the size of Coszemel. Have fun, stay safe. There are many places in the waterfalls you can slide down and dive off of. Great fun kid place.

    1. Hi Howie, Pat and I visited these ruins back in Oct2008 (pre-kids) and should we be near them again (much farther south then where we are now) we’ll go again. Agua Azul looks cool.

  4. The rental car looks decent. I was expecting more of a POS for the price you paid. Points removed for no “plumber butt-crack” in the photo however, LOL

  5. I’m sorry to point this out. personally, I would be pissed off if my parents put my pics on the internet without my consent.

  6. Not cool by what standard? Consent? They are minors after all.

I’m sure that you can find better things to say about the Bum’s than that.
Too many VW pics? Not Cool!
    Tacos? Not Cool!
Beer? (OMG you drink in front of the kids?) Not Cool!

Parents taking pictures of their kids being kids and living a pretty unique lifestyle? Cool!!

Also, that pic driving the VW brings back memories of sitting in my father’s lap in a Karmann Ghia too many years ago.

    The Bums? Very Cool.
