Water, Water, All Around

We motored all day pretty uneventfully to Isla Isabela where I was quickly reminded why I’ve never liked this place—the anchorage is terrible. Coral and rocks on top of hard packed ground, with no sand in sight. I anchored three times, thought I had a decent hold, dove in to take a look and found the anchor lying on its side with the chain zigzagging through some rocks. Anchored again, found the anchor with a tiny bit of tip in the ground and a maze of big rocks in front of it. Decided that was it, we were going to eat some dinner and hit the road again.

Along the way today we spotted some humpbacks playing and decided to go have a closer look. Over and over again they jumped up out of the water and smacked themselves as hard as they could on the surface. They never seemed to glance our way, even as we cruised right past.

Tonight Ouest was getting a bath when we ran out of water. We had to rinse her off with our spare five gallon tank we keep aboard for exactly this reason. I’m not sure what happened—we always make it two weeks on our water, but this time we tapped out at eight days? Something seems off there. A little worried now that we’ve got a leak, though I haven’t heard the bilge pump running more than would be expected. More likely we just weren’t being conservative enough. But still, that’s like 25 gallons a day. Way more than the 10-15 we’re used to.

Anyway, time to get our butts to Mazatlan. We’re going to leave after the kids fall into a deep sleep and hopefully cover the 90 miles by noon.

  1. Yikes!!! After watching the famous clip showing a whale crashing onto a sailboat and then watching those monsters practising their technique, I’d be out of there quick…at a blazing speed of 6 knots/h.

  2. OMG…look at those Humpbacks? That’s on my bucket list, to see a humpback whale, Once a long time ago when I was in Maui, we took a little cruise out to the crater to snorkle. The tourist boats “captain” went on and on about how they’ve seen a humpback everyday!! Story of my life, no whales on “my” cruise…well, someday…
