Boy, Beach, Birthday

Portland is just a nice ninety minute drive from the coast, but it feels like it’s about 2,000 miles of difference in temperature. Portland, ninety-five degrees, beach, sixty-five. As much as I love the ocean and the beach, and even the beauty of Oregon, this still hardly qualifies for me. It’s always cold. But, it is fun to get out of the city and get your toes in the sand, so with Lowe’s birthday coming on, we headed for Rockaway Beach.

Stopped in Canon Beach for lunch and salt water taffy. This town is bananas. This is the beach on a cold Thursday afternoon. I don’t know if we’d ever get used to this.

Happy 7th Birthday, Lowe!

These guys were scattered all over the beach in the morning. Probably froze to death. Okay, I’m complaining about the cold too much, I’ll stop now.

Still working on the egg cracking technique.

The house was right on the beach, and had a hot tub, so a Polar Bear Plunge into the Pacific seemed like it would be a fun thing to do. And it was. You can’t help but laugh when the icy water sucks the breath right out of your body.

The sky unexpectedly cleared, like its own little birthday present.

Ouest bought Lowe, Cupcake the talking dog. It’s so fun to watch their faces when they actually pick out their own gifts to give. Ouest was excited for days about giving him this surprise. He has to wait until we get back to the boat to get his sailing dinghy, though!

It’s been another fun year for all of us with Lowe. He still loves his mama more than anything else in the world. His sister is still his best friend. And I still get to be the designated leg masseur for the boy who seems to grow taller by the day.

  1. What gorgeous photos! I can’t imagine being that cold anywhere in August…no thanks. But we do love that part of the country. Lowe is so adorable. He is going to be breaking hearts big time in a few years. I feel for the girls who will have mad crushes on him all over the world!

  2. Happy Birthday Lowe!! Great pictures, I especially like the one of the two of you! I love you guys 🙂

  3. Happy Birthday, Lowe. You are indeed a lucky boy, and everyone is lucky to be around you!

  4. Rockaway is my favorite beach and I love the cool weather. As a kid we spent a week every summer over 4th of July there in little old cabins and our cousins would rent in the same spot. My parents later retired there. Best memories ever are in Rockaway.

  5. Happy birthday from one of your great aunt’s. You and Ouest are so lucky to live such an exciting life. Give grandma a hug from me.

  6. I especially loved that last picture of Lowe. I’ve never met a boy yet who didn’t use the front collar of his tee shirt as a napkin.

  7. Love the picture of you and the kids running up the beach after your polar bear plunge, Pat. A healthy, athletic lifestyle as a young family portends a lifetime of active adventure and good health for the four of you. Happy Birthday, Lowe.

  8. HaPpY (belated) BiRtHdAy To Lowe! Great pictures of sibling love and the family. Thanks for sharing.
