We had hoped to be out to New York by Lowe’s birthday, as we had promised him cupcakes at the Statue of Liberty. Both kids are beyond excited over the Statue of Liberty. I hope it lives up to the hype. But, things happen, so instead of Lady Liberty, we got to have a nice backyard birthday with all the family around instead.

Lowe isn’t the type who cares to have a lot of attention draped upon him, so the idea of a big birthday made him a little nervous. When we first told him that we wouldn’t make it to New York his question was, “Will we still have one of our birthdays? Just our family?”

The promise of more gifts than usual was enough to put his concerns to rest, however. And of course, in the end, he had a great day surrounded by aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

The day did double-duty as a going away party as well, seeing as we’d be taking off in just a couple of days.

A new “car mat.” We couldn’t load up Platano without an imaginary town to drive cars around on. The kids christened the truck Platano, and correct me each time I call it, “the truck.”

Happy fifth birthday, Lowe! You’re a great kid. Always bruised, always dirty, always laughing, always making jokes, always exploring, always breaking stuff, always capturing bugs, always riding, always crashing things—in short, you are always a boy, with all the rough and tumble that comes with it. But the best part of having a five-year-old boy is that despite all of that, you still snuggle up with Mama at night, or with me as you’re waking up in the morning. It’s all of these things together that make you so great to all of us.
