Guadalajara Centro

A couple of more days in Guadalajara was not a bad way to pass the time. More plazas, museums, and markets. There seemed very little reason to venture beyond about a ten block radius from our hotel on the Plaza de Armas. I’m glad we were there on a weekend because everything was busy—more vibrant than the workweek.

Anyway, overall impression of Guadalajara is that we could be happy there for a while. That is, if the kids weren’t so eager to get back to “Papa’s Blue Bus.” When we got to the bus they actually climbed up on the bumper, gave it a hug, and told us that it had been crying. It’s fair to say that the kids are fond of their home.

Plaza de Armas. We are forever feeding pigeons.

After spotting these cars the guy in charge could have asked us for a hundred bucks an hour and we would have been obliged to pay. Instead we paid two bucks for ten minutes. Of course we paid this multiple times.

Caption contest worthy.

We told the kids they could each pick out one toy. Ouest took a while to choose between a flute and a yo-yo. The flute won out. Fifteen pesos. Lowe couldn’t decide on anything. The only thing he wanted was a huge wooden truck. We told him there was no room in the bus for it, but he assured us he could find a place in his room. We told him no. So he looked some more, but it was clear he wasn’t in love with anything. We told him that he didn’t have to get anything and we could just wait until another time when he found something he liked—and I’ll be damned if he didn’t say, “Okay.” Man, when I was a kid there is no way I would have been walking out of that market empty handed.

I love these little home-made toys. A couple of plastic cups, some foam, a piece of wood, and a rusty bottle cap. Fifteen pesos and they entertain our kids for a week. I asked the guy how many of these he sold a day—maybe forty on a Saturday.

While I was taking this picture Ali was watching a beggar at the other door beat a drunken hobo over the head with her shoe. Right time, wrong place.

Morning over the plaza—time to fly.

Nothing like trying to explain the meaning behind a religious painting to a five-year-old. “Oh, all that blood? And the nails? And the swords? And that heart in that guy’s hand? Oh, that all has something to do with what some people believe is God’s love, honey. What? You’re confused? What part don’t you understand?”

  1. Wow I’m the first to comment. Yay. Well, I have spoken about my woes and forgot to say how awesome it is to see your blogs. Every time I log onto by fuzzily and see how you are raising your children and see how lovely you and your wife seem to have everything together it just blesses me, it gives me such inspiration and hope someday God will give me a wife and more children. Children are the inheritance of the Lord, Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. I’m so glad to know you Pat even if it is through the blog. I followed you since 2012 and it’s amazing amazing to me what what I have been able to do and what you guys been able to do since that time. Thanks for everything, and I would like to hear from you about sail boat situation below is a post I made last night Thanks again for your encouragement, love, and passion for life.
“I remember your troubles and re read the emails again, IDK, your boat did do the job. I’m going to look at your suggestion on the 52′ but I am single, living in the hood here on st thomas and teaching at a high school. Have roughly 40 k on a fixed ten year loan and possibly double that on a 20 year loan. WhT do you think? I skype if you do. Langce1 is my handle”. The 52′ nor than isn’t in the mix. I would buy a gunboat if I had that kind of cash …

    1. Yeah, I was joking about the Nordhavn. My advice for your budget is to steer well clear of any catamaran. Anything in that price range is going to be a POS. Find a nice 30′ for 25k, fix it up a bit, and enjoy the islands. Good luck, let me know how things turn out.

      1. Maybe, but ours was a 2002, this guy says his is a 2001. Whatever, glad it’s still out there and the repairs we had done are holding up. The builders of the Wildcat claimed our repairs were all wrong. 🙂

  2. I love the picture of the Cristobal tableau. He seems pretty well represented for a Spanish conquerer!

  3. Alright, the bench photo is totally brill. The linearity and symmetry of all the layers, flattened into one plane. What are they all talking about, where are they all driving, what are they selling. Like that Gonzales pic in your “Monkey” post, so many questions, at odds with the total realism of the image. Nice. I’ll let myself out now…

  4. You totally set me up…here I was thinking “look…the kids are fully dressed in this blog post” then BAM! 😉

    Great photos as always.

  5. Wow, great pictures. I go to Irapuato (Guanajuato/Silao/Leon) all the time for work, it’s weird to see your family standing where I’ve been, that museum is beautiful. I’ll be there the first week of June, if you’re still in the area I’ll buy you two a beer. buen dia!

  6. Next time you come this way, be sure and take a trip 45 k west of Guadalajara and see Guachimontones, unique pyramids in the world, they are round and look like a wedding cake. I tried to post a photo of them, but only the words copied.

  7. What nice toys. It gives me an idea for a project with my son. My girls are now adults and were recently talking about playing when they were children. All the expensive toys they had, and the fondest memories are playing with big cardboard boxes I brought home from work.

  8. Agree…love the photo of Ouest with the flute. Not up to par on the photography terms but i will say it is a chillin picture!
