King County Fair

On our way up to Seattle we stopped at the King County Fair. We love small county fairs—the down-home redneck-y goodness of them. Part of that, I’m sure, is due to our nostalgia for simpler times. Very little has changed between a fair when I was a kid, and a fair now.

This turned out to be our favorite so far. Not because the fair itself was great in some way, but because Lowe is now old, and tall, enough to go on all the rides with Ouest. Ali and I got to just stand back and watch the two of them have an absolute blast together, racing from one ride to the next—smiling, talking, and laughing together the entire day. As parents, I doubt there are many things that could bring us more happiness than watching that.

Come on! Look at that! It’s like, a human ladder, or something. How could you not be amazed? It’s the downsized splendor of a small fair’s circus act that makes it great.

Lowe, at 50″ tall, means I don’t have to endure nearly barfing on rides like this any longer. When I turned forty a switch went off in my body from being able to spin a million times without issue, to three times on a merry-go-round producing dizziness.

I can still be convinced to go on a ride or two to convince a reluctant younger child that it’s fun.

Watching these two teens stare at their phones the entire ride was good for a laugh. Put a shoulder-length mullet on that guy, take the phones away, and this could have been us in high school.

Rolled into Seattle later than expected at the end of a great day.

  1. I think something happens to your inner ear as you get older. I’m the same, loved all the rides as a kid and now my husband and I take turns deciding who’s going to almost throw up to keep our son company.

    1. Ha! We are excited to have her aunt and cousin at the MN State Fair in a few weeks – we are off the hook for throwing up!

  2. Missed you guys by a couple of days, but I was able to visit Seattle. Ya still have an open invite in Virginia.
