Lowe Turns Two

Lowe Bleu turns two. Finally. It feels like he was one forever. Not that I’m rushing him to grow up, but seriously, it feels like he has been one for at least four years now.

We started off the day with balloons. Because no Schulte birthday is complete without one hundred balloons. The kids spent an hour running in circles around the room plowing through the pile. All that expended breath was so worth it.

Ouest helped Ali make cupcakes. First time from scratch—and they were perfection.

Birthday time. Ouest blew out the candle without warning the first time through. On the second run through Lowe gave it his all, but he still doesn’t quite get the concept of blowing air out of his mouth. He can make really good sound effects that would have you believe he was blowing very hard, but in reality there is no breeze.

We picked up a couple of pirate swords and some face paint for the big day. Lowe didn’t care for the face painting, and only played with the sword for a couple of minutes—reminding us once again why we don’t do gifts. Kids just don’t care. The toy Lowe played with the most today was a 2000 Fisher Price mini-van hand-me-down from his cousin. It’s his favorite. That and the VW bugs.

Later in the afternoon we went out for tacos and horchata. At some point I realized again that these kids will break me—financially. Despite the fact that these tacos only cost ten pesos apiece. We started out ordering five. Then two more as the kids went on a feeding frenzy. Then another. And another. Eventually we’d downed nine tacos. Ali and I were still hungry, having barely eaten, but I couldn’t bring myself to order any more. Five minutes later, while feeding the pigeons, both kids announced they were hungry for snacks. And they sat there on the bench alongside a hundred pigeons mowing down snacks produced from Ali’s magic bag.

Anyway, Lowe, congrats. You’re two. You’ll most likely have another ninety-eight of these.

  1. Your blog is so delightful! I taught kindergarten for 10 years before moving into foster care, parents are the first teachers. You and Ali rock as parents/teachers! The education they are getting is priceless! I realize I have said it before, but I believe it deserves mentioning again, your photo’s are just beautiful. Like Nancy M., I think the birthday banner is something special. Be well, Valerie
