Portland Excursions

Despite appearances, Ouest walked out of here with two holes in her ears, and without shedding a tear. She did the same thing a couple years ago, but they kept getting infected that time, so we let them heal and close up. Personally, I would have been happy for her to never try again, but she wanted them.

While everyone else in Portland uses quadruple super heavy-duty locks, we use a different method of securing our bikes—the tangle method.

It’s possible this could be our last Portland visit for quite a while—Grammy is moving. While we’re excited for her, we are going to miss this city. We’ve spent a lot of time here in the last decade, and consider it very much a home away from home. While we’re here this time helping Grammy prepare for her move, we have also been trying to squeeze in as many sites as we can. Despite how much time we’ve spent here, we find there are still a million things to see and do. Like spending an afternoon strolling around Mt. Tabor.

Much to Lowe’s chagrin, Ouest has really gotten into reading these graphic novels, and can stay glued to them for hours.

It’s taken a long time, but we finally found a good Mexican place within walking distance. Good, not great. Nothing will ever compare to the real deal. But at least we can go for a nice stroll through the neighborhoods, sit outside, and eat a few tacos.

This fairy garden has been on the sidewalk a few blocks away from us for the kids’ entire lives, and they still enjoy sitting around it finding new treasures to play with for a few minutes.

Mt. Hood. We’ve driven the mountain roads all around Mt. Hood many times through the years, always coming and going from Portland, but we’ve never taken the time to actually drive up there.

As usual, we were woefully underdressed for a mountain excursion, but perfectly dressed for the sun at lower elevation.

Trillium Lake is right down the hill.

  1. No more Portland, boo boo. Where’s Grammy’s next home going to be? Hope someplace that you’ll love to visit. Great photos as always.

    1. Grammy is moving to Arizona full-time come spring. It will be a retirement community so our visits will be much different but there will be many places for us to visit around her.

    1. Hah! Both “Abolish Ice” and “Migration is Beautiful” are slogans for people pursuing global warming…

  2. As someone who has followed you for years…my brother and I have bought you Pizza. I have sailed the same seas and now travel in my RV all over this great Country. But you LOST me! Migration is beautiful…you are correct. The concept of “Abolish Ice”…..really? We all need a history lesson on how many lives they have actually have saved, and all the good they really do.

    1. You do know I didn’t paint that on the park’s piano, right? As for a history lesson? ICE has been around for a mere 15 years and has an annual budget of $7.6 Billion, and I really do wonder how many lives they have saved with all that money in such a short amount of time. Maybe you have that number?

        1. Prior to 2003 ICE was the INS enforcement division and the US Customs enforcement division (combined budgets close to the 7.6 billion mark). They were combined to form ICE since they performed very similar functions (one looking illegally imported goods and the other for illegally imported people).

  3. Hey Guys, been following since it was just two of you. My family and I live in St. George, UT. We are considering a trawler and full time travel with our kiddos. I am just wondering about some details about the Trawler. Can you give a breakdown of monthly expenses? I would really like to know about average gas prices you are paying and how often you are having to get gas. Thanks in advance.

    1. Pat is working on a trawler vs sail post which will give insight on diesel costs. There will be no monthly insight though, as it is different for everyone. What we spend after not having lived a “house life” for 15 years (moved aboard Bumfuzzle #1 9/12/2003!) would be different for a family that has been living in a house and move aboard a trawler. We haven’t had a cellphone or television since taking off, we aren’t the norm, and our monthly expenses wouldn’t mean much to most families looking to take off.

  4. “Hey Guy’s, before you beat feet out of P Town, you might try “Ole Frijole” at 42nd & Killingsworth. Its about a 20 min walk or 4 min by car. Haven’t been there in a few years, but when I’m in town its a stop. Tickled my taste buds…. Cheers” Not sure how my comment ending up as a reply to “end global migration” or something like that? Anyway enjoy.

  5. My youngest daughter had trouble with getting her ears pierced also, never healed the way most people’s ears do and always infected. We finally figured out she has some metal allergies and can only wear specific metal in the lobes. Hypoallergenic helped and I’ll check on what she can wear now that she older.
