Sad But New

About town.

Lowe and I left rock climbing one night and had a flat. Pulled into the Oxxo and hopped an Uber home. Went back in the morning and wheeled it down the street.

In San Miguel there is a shop similar to this about every three blocks. You won’t notice all of them, but they are there. I rolled up and these guys immediately dropped what they were doing, wheeled the bike in and spent the next thirty minutes (back tire, so it was some work) changing out the tube. They also did me a favor and scrounged up a bolt to replace one that had wiggled loose on the seat. Twelve bucks and I was on my way again.

I’ve seen some pretty egregious flaunting of parking laws, but this one seemed pretty unnecessary. Makes me think some kids’ friend wheeled his bike into the space as a joke.

With a couple of road trips for swim and climbing coming up we finally caved in and bought a car. We did pretty good, I think, having gone about eight months without one. This is a Suzuki Jimny which I jokingly refer to as the Unofficial Sponsor of San Miguel de Allende. They are everywhere here. And for about 99% of your driving needs, it’s perfect in this little town where the furthest you need to drive most months is a five mile radius. Two doors, four seats, a storage area just wide enough for a shopping bag, and an overall package that fits neatly inside the small garage and narrow cobblestone streets.

The dealerships here in Mexico like to launch fireworks and do a big unveiling when customers buy a new car. I think my guy Sergio was a little disappointed when I broke the news that I wasn’t interested in the festivities. I gave him a smile and pulled off the sheet covering the car, but no pyrotechnics. He of course had no idea that this ended the Bumfuzzle 1950s and 60s-only vehicles streak at five in a row and was a bittersweet moment for me.

      1. It is a dictatorship you just haven’t realized you’re not the one in charge lol.
Good news is that you have a sweet ride you won’t have to be tinkering with every week to keep it running!
        Keep on enjoying that bike.

  1. A Jimny!!!! This is the content your auto-enthusiast followers have been dying for 😀

Is it 4wd? What kind of options? We need more pics of this forbidden fruit!

    1. 4wd yes. Options? There really aren’t any. They come pretty much one way. Pick one of four colors and there you have it.

  2. Excellent choice on the Suzuki Jimny, wish they sold them here in canada but not avialable here since Suzuki stopped selling cars here about 10 years ago.

    1. Probably shouldn’t frame it as a “choice” by Suzuki not to sell in North America, so much as it was a choice by North American governments. Americans and Canadians, by and large, don’t seem to realize that some (most) of the best vehicles are being sold everywhere else in the world, and for half the price.
