The Strip

We thought it would be fun to have a Las Vegas Strip day. Starting at the far south end of town with a sign that would have welcomed all the riffraff driving up from LA since the early days.

I thought this line was kind of amusing. Only in America (and Canada) would a line form so politely to take a picture in front of a sign like this. It wasn’t as if there was anything there that said to form a line and wait your turn for your picture—we just do it.

We hit the Bellagio for the water fountain show—which we all would have liked to have gone on longer. Pretty cool as far as spraying water in a giant pool goes. Oh, and we also spent an hour or so being gluttonous at the buffet. A Vegas first for all of us.

My kids were convinced that if the coins had gone in these sculptures instead of in the water, they were fair game.

And then on to the Ventian for a gondola ride. Total cheeseballs. Unfortunately the line was too long, so we bailed and decided to take their money instead.

Porsche 356. Even has our luggage rack.

My mom has never gambled in her life. She doesn’t even know the rules of blackjack. But that didn’t stop us from cashing $100 and throwing it down on the table. We split the money and went to work. Six hands—and roughly three minutes—later, we got up from the table with $400. Since neither one of us cares for gambling, it was so easy to just get up and walk away with a quick win. My mom thought it was absolutely hilarious. I just enjoy beating the house, and paying for all our taxi rides in one shot.

I got in trouble for taking this picture. Rules, you know.

  2. I hear ya and feel precisely the same way about rulz rulz and the authority thing too.
Curious about people lining up like that. Do you figure it’s because we’re so cowed by the rulz and authority that we meekly line up or rather is it the mark of civil courtesy?

  3. My then boyfriend (now husband) and I along with his brother and wife went to Vegas in 1970. Yes, we travelled all the way from Winnipeg Manitoba. As it was in those days … one travelled straight through because motels were expensive. We ran out of gas in Utah as I remember and some very kind Morman’s gave us a ride to a service station. I think I actually remember that Vegas sign when we got there. I will make a long comment short… the reason my then boyfriend took me there was to ask me to marry him and get married there. That didn’t happen because we chickened out lol. We could not disappoint our parents. We did all the Vegas stuff and saw the shows etc. Hey.. I saw Johnathan Winters .. made my trip… When we left we went to San Francisco… Yes, I had flowers in my hair…and we bought a waterbed. We never slept on anything else since.
