Competing

San Miguel has bouganvillea spilling out of every home. Doesn’t seem to matter the time of year.

Brand new washer six months ago, and dead today. I mean, I know things are just built to break these days, but come on. Rather than wait for warranty repair I figured I’d just replace the board myself. Nope. Not to be found anywhere on the interwebs. Little did I know at the time that eight weeks later we’d still be without a washing machine.

Time trial competition to see who would be invited to the trials for the national competition. Backstroke? Yep.

Breast stroke? Yep.

Happy coach? Yep.

Freestyle? I mean, come on.

The older kids got to spot the little ones in their races, too.

Hanging out with friends in Centro at night. It really is the most beautiful town in Mexico.

Ali and I took Ouest and her friend to a “bazaar.” We did a loop through there in under two minutes, with empty hands, wondering what in the world the point of that was. Thirty minutes later the girls emerged all smiles as they looked through their newfound treasures. You can’t believe how much stuff a few dollars will buy you around town at the different markets.

Another weekend, another tournament. This time it was Lowe’s turn with rock climbing. We went up to Leon the night before and wandered around the Centro Historico. No matter how ugly the outskirts of a big city in Mexico are, you can always count on a few pretty and bustling blocks around the central square.

We discovered that during the same weekend there was Mexico’s largest balloon festival (around 200, I think) and a huge outdoor concert. All we caught of that was some of the balloons at the early morning start time for the climbing tourney.

Lowe did great. I can’t believe both how tall he’s gotten lately, and how strong climbing is making him. What a great sport. At first I wasn’t sure if he’d be able to pull off any of the five routes they had laid out. They looked crazy hard to me. But in the end he had finished three, came insanely close multiple times on a fourth, and was only really beaten by one. It was fun, and he’s looking forward to more. As someone whose entire childhood revolved around competitive sports, my kids missing out on that has really been the one thing that I didn’t like about our mobile lifestyle. I really enjoy watching both of them strive to do their best at a sport.

On the drive home we passed through a tiny town that had been absolutely overrun by these reindeer. We snatched one up to try and bring a TINY bit of Christmas into the house.

Zipping up to pick Ouest up from Centro. I pulled over to get a quick shot of the sun skipping across the yellow buildings.

Then I snatched a shot of Ouest and her friend walking down the street and she told me I looked like a pedo. Haha, thanks, kiddo. Notice how many people are wandering around in the background. That’s the central square, and that tent has some Christmas vendors under it. But that’s just an average evening here. The place is always bustling with people. I try and think of a town this size in the U.S. that is always full of life like this and I come up completely empty.

  1. Yeah, electronic boards, avoid them. Samsung DC92, good luck with that. Still periodically repairing our old Mexican GE washer/dryers from 30 years ago.

  2. Ernie is right. Find a old GE/Kenmore (same thing). We bought the newest greatest. The washer chewed holes in our clothes. The dryer went out after a year. The computer board cost more than the dryer (1200.00) plus 300 to install- he had to completely disassemble the thing. Bought a old Kenmore washer/dryer and Senor Trevino said he could fix it again and again, but he won’t have to.

  3. We got tired of going through washers and finally broke down and went with a Speed Queen—simple and reliable as a hammer.

  4. Never mind the washer drama-how about those kids? 🙂
I’ve been following on & off since before they were born & it’s so great to see their achievements! I got a big kick out of that photo of Lowe looking like a twisted pretzel on his climb! He’s so tall now-WOW!
The Swiss cow balloon was strange yet funny to see, since we’re sorta Swiss….anyway Happy New Year! Hope you figure out the washer! 🙂

  5. Great to see your kids getting involved in the local lifestyle. When I saw the picture of Lowe standing next to Ali, the first thing that came to mind was how tall he was getting. Height is good for a climber!

    Happy New Year!

  6. So happy to hear how well your kids are doing in their athletic interests. And so tall, both of them. Glad they’re thriving. And you too of course 😄

  7. Wow, just how tall IS Lowe? Looks like he shot up overnight! Love the kids doing athletic pursuits that they’re both obviously talented at.
